Kagune, Quinque and You
Here on Tokyo Ghoul: Shattered Dreams, no two characters are going to be alike. This is able to happen because of the fact that no two characters are usually going to have the same Kagune or Quinque. Each and every Kagune or Quinque that a player could hope to make for their character are heavily customizable, allowing for something tailored exactly to the build you're looking for. Creating a Kagune or Quinque is relatively easy, so long as the steps below are followed as they're listed. If built correctly, the end-product should be something unique to the owner of that specific Kagune or Quinque.
Kagune
Creating a Kagune is an incredibly simple process, and can generally be done quite quickly. Firstly, upon creating your character, determine your character's RC-type or types. Normally, characters are only going to have one RC-type, but some, like Chimera, have the potential to start with two different types. The RC-types that a Ghoul or Half-Ghoul has to choose from are Ukaku, Koukaku, Rinkaku, and Bikaku. Each one offers a slight shift to a character's starting Stats when manifested, as listed below:
- Ukaku Kagune, when manifested, will grant a character an extra Rank in Speed or Potency, but will reduce a character's Strength or Resilience by one Rank, to a minimum of C-Rank, chosen on creation.
- Koukaku Kagune, when manifested, will grant a character an extra Rank in Resilience or Strength, but will reduce a character's Speed or Potency by one Rank, to a minimum of C-Rank, chosen on creation.
- Rinkaku Kagune, when manifested, will grant a character an extra Rank in Potency or Strength, but will reduce a character's Resilience or Speed by one Rank, to a minimum of C-Rank, chosen on creation.
- Bikaku Kagune, when manifested, will grant a character an extra Rank in a stat of their choice, but will reduce a stat of their choice by one Rank, to a minimum of C-Rank. These chosen stats must be different, and cannot be Aim or Presence.
Chimera, which have the ability to manifest both of their Kagune together, function somewhat differently from normal Ghouls, and for obvious reasons. Both of a Chimera's Kagune possess their own increases and decreases. Upon choosing these increases and decreases, the stats selected for both Kagune must be different (i.e. A Ukaku/Rinkaku Chimera cannot select potency to increase for both Kagune, nor can they choose to decrease Resilience for both). When both are manifested at the same time, the Ghoul in question is granted both increases from both of their Kagune, but also suffer from both decreases from their Kagune. In order to begin as a Chimera on character creation, a character must have their Presence at A-Rank. Once an RC-type is chosen for the Kagune in question, take a look at your character's Presence Rank. Depending on what that Rank is, your character may be eligible for one or more unique traits to apply to their Kagune. From there, follow the steps below, in order to determine the traits you are able to choose from, in the Traits section below. Each RC type of Kagune has their own range at which they're effective from; Ukaku has five feet of melee range, while being able to fire projectiles up to 40 feet. Koukaku has up to ten feet of melee range, Rinkaku has up to fifteen feet of melee range, and Bikaku has up to twenty feet of melee range.
Kakuja
Kakuja are the absolute pinnacle of a Ghoul's evolutionary capabilities. Coming from actively cannibalizing other Ghouls, Kakuja is the term used to describe both the upgraded Kagune a Ghoul has the potential to receive, as well as the Ghoul itself upon obtaining this status. Naturally, something such as Kakuja is an option that characters have access to down the road. Due to the nature of Kakuja, these can be obtained at any point of a character's Evolution, but the strength of a Kakuja and the chance for obtaining one is heavily dependent on a character's Potency Rank. The higher their Potency, the more likely they'll be to achieve one, and the more Traits associated with making use of their Kakuja they'll receive and/or be able to receive down the line.
The process for obtaining Kakuja is one that isn't particularly difficult, but one that does require a bit of luck. Upon completing any thread where your character has consumed a Ghoul's Kakuhou, when that thread is graded for rewards, a member of the site staff will roll a 100-sided die in the Random Chance Rolls chat on Discord. If the roll is lower than a certain value based on your character's Potency Rank, they'll mutate and unlock an incomplete, Half-Kakuja. The target number for obtaining a Half-Kakuja begins at 20. Starting at B-Rank, and increasing after that, every rank in Potency that a character possesses increases this by 20. At SS-Rank, when this target number becomes 100, upon cannibalizing, a Ghoul will automatically mutate a Half-Kakuja.
More often than not, this Half-Kakuja usually results in a "berserker" state for the Ghoul or Half-Ghoul in question. They'll usually end up quite erratic, and unable to distinguish between friend or foe in the worst cases. Self-control is not exactly an option in this stage, and will result in a two-Rank decrease to the Ghoul's Presence while this Half-Kakuja is manifested. While this does not decrease Traits, it leaves them unable to effectively communicate with others in an efficient and intelligent manner.
Half-Kakuja is something that is incredibly taxing for a Ghoul to use, and because of the nature of the Kakuja, forces heavy amounts of Stamina drain upon the user just for simply engaging their Kakuja. Upon activating a Half-Kakuja, 5 Stamina is lost every single post, and all other Stamina costs are doubled. While this might be the case, however, that isn't to say that manifesting a Half-Kakuja isn't without benefits. Upon unlocking a Half-Kakuja, a Ghoul then gains one Special Trait, detailed below. When making attacks with a Kakuja, a Ghoul uses their Potency Rank instead of their Strength. If a Half-Ghoul unlocks Half-Kakuja, they are able to push their Potency Rank up to SSS-Rank, instead of just capping at S-Rank.
After obtaining Half-Kakuja, a character is given the option to go through and master that in order to obtain Full-Kakuja status. Obtaining Full-Kakuja functions similarly to Half-Kakuja, where it's based off of a dice roll dependent on a Ghoul's Potency Rank, but the numbers are slightly different. The target number for obtaining a Full-Kakuja begins at 10. Starting at B-Rank, this increases by 10, up to a maximum of 60 at SSS-Ranked Potency. When a roll is made, if the number rolled is less than the target number, then the Ghoul in question has mutated, and has earned a Full-Kakuja. Every thread that a Ghoul manifests their Half-Kakuja increases this target number by 2. When this roll is requested, every thread in which Half-Kakuja is used must be cited in order for this bonus to be applied.
Upon obtaining Full-Kakuja, manifesting Half-Kakuja no longer has a stamina cost attached to it, and can be used freely. In addition to that, the Ghoul in question now has the option to manifest a Full-Kakuja. The benefits granted from a Full-Kakuja are based off of the benefits chosen for a Ghoul's Half-Kakuja; When Full-Kakuja is manifested, the Ghoul in question then gains an additional Special Trait, on top of the one gained from Half-Kakuja.
Quinque
Creating a Quinque is a process that is a bit more in-depth than creating a Kagune or Kakuja. There's quite a bit that goes into creating a Quinque; namely, those cost in Ryo in order to have one produced. Depending on what a Quinque is able to do, the cost of creating said Quinque is prone to change as different benefits are chosen. At Character Creation, new Humans, Half-Humans, and CCG-Affiliated Half-Ghouls are able to spend their starting Ryo on creating Quinque. Creating a Quinque begins from the same process that creating a Kagune does; selecting an RC-type. Much like a Ghoul, Quinque can be created as Ukaku, Koukaku, Rinkaku, and Bikaku. Each one has the same applicable ranges for attacks when compared to Kagune; Ukaku has up to five feet of melee range and up to forty feet of projectile range, Koukaku has up to ten feet of melee range, Rinkaku has up to fifteen feet of melee range, and Bikaku has up to twenty feet of melee range. After an RC-type is chosen, a Rank is then required to be selected for Quinque. The Rank of a Quinque will determine the stats of the Quinque in question. The higher the Rank, the greater the increases. Those prices are listed below alongside the Rank of the Quinque, as well as what the Rank determines. The Rank of a Quinque will determine the effective Strength of a Quinque, the Quinque's durability. When wielding a Quinque, the wielder will use their own Strength for the purpose of wounds caused by attacks, but the Quinque's Strength will be used when aiming to break through other Quinque, Kagune, or Kakuja.
- C-Rank Quinque cost 1,000 Ryo, and will have a Strength of C-Rank and Durability of C-Rank.
- B-Rank Quinque cost 2,000 Ryo, and will have a Strength of C-Rank and Durability of B-Rank.
- A-Rank Quinque cost 4,000 Ryo, and will have a Strength of B-Rank and Durability of A-Rank. This is the highest-Rank Quinque that a character can have at Character Creation.
- S-Rank Quinque cost 8,000 Ryo, and will have a Strength of B-Rank and Durability of S-Rank.
- SS-Rank Quinque cost 16,000 Ryo, and will have a Strength of A-Rank and Durability of SS-Rank.
- SSS-Rank Quinque cost 32,000 Ryo, and will have a Strength of A-Rank and Durability of SSS-Rank.
In addition to these benefits, Quinque are also built in order to combat against Ghouls. As such, there are certain benefits attached to going into combat against a specific type of Ghoul with the right Quinque for the job. When a Quinque's RC-type corresponds with a Ghoul's RC-type that has a weakness to that of the Quinque, the Quinque's automatically inflicts wounds of one rank higher than what they normally would be, to a maximum of SSS-Rank wounds. This means that Ukaku Quinque against Bikaku Ghouls, Koukaku Quinque against Ukaku Ghouls, Rinkaku Quinque against Koukaku Ghouls, and Bikaku Quinque against Rinkaku Ghouls will grant an extra Rank worth of wounds when successfully landing an attack. In the case of fighting against a Chimera, Humans now have two different weaknesses they have the potential to exploit, should they plan the encounter correctly.
Much like Kagune, Quinque also have the option to possess a number of Traits. Any given Quinque can possess up to three Minor Traits and three Major Traits at the same time, provided the appropriate Ryo costs are paid in order to add these traits to the Quinque, and a character possesses the Presence in order to own a Quinque with those traits. B-Rank, S-Rank, and SSS-Rank Presence all grant one Minor Trait, and one Major Trait slot. When a Ghoul is slain, and their Kakuhou harvested, all traits that Ghoul's Kagune had are immediately applied to a Quinque made out of it for no cost, whether the Trait itself was Reserved or Free. After that, every Minor Trait added to the Quinque in question costs 500 Ryo, and every Major Trait added to the Quinque in question costs 1,000 Ryo.
Quinque are interesting when compared to Kagune, because they're weapons that aren't bound to characters; any given character has the potential to wield any given Quinque at any given time. The ability to do this is only dependent on a character's ability to actually possess said Quinque during the time they wish to wield it. As such, aside from Mass-Produced Quinque (which are labeled under the Quinque Database), there can only ever be a singular instance of a Quinque at any given time. That Quinque may be stolen from players, or damaged beyond repair, but all-in-all, there is only one instance of that Quinque that is able to be produced at any given time. Duplicates cannot be made of non Mass-Produced or set-based Quinque.
Post-Character Creation, creating Quinque will require a bit of work for those that are looking to do so. Any and all Quinque created are going to require those in question to obtain a Kakuhou, generally from taking down a Ghoul in a thread. From there, CCG-aligned individuals or those that have the ability to/can find someone that can forge Quinque are able to have one made out of that Kakuhou. While the RC type of that Kakuhou isn't something that can be changed, the Traits the new Quinque are going to possess can be interchanged, per the rules. Instead of simply choosing a Rank for your Quinque at this stage, take the Rank of the Kakuhou used to make your Quinque. A Kakuhou's Rank is equal to the Personal Rank of the Ghoul it was harvested from.
Kakuja Quinque
Kakuja Quinque are unique in the sense that there are two distinct types of Kakuja Quinque; Weapon Quinque and Armor Quinque. In order to obtain Kakuja Quinque, a Human or Half-Human must kill a Kakuja in-thread. This Kakuja can be either NPC or RPC, that much does not matter, but this Kakuja does need to be slain, and their Kakuhou harvested after having used their Kakuja at some point during the thread; what's not known to exist cannot be drawn upon to create a Quinque. After this requirement is met, an additional Ryo cost will be applied in order to craft a Kakuja Quinque; after Rank costs and Trait costs have been calculated, that Ryo cost is then doubled to determine the final cost of the Kakuja Quinque.
Kakuja Quinque are unique, however; in addition to the Traits chosen when originally producing the Quinque, Kakuja Quinque possess the benefits gained from that Ghoul's Kakuja; the Traits that a Ghoul has chosen for their Kakuja carries over to these Quinque. From here, the chosen type of Kakuja Quinque comes into play; if the creator chose a Weapon Quinque, the Quinque's Strength and Durability are instead equal to the Rank of the Kakuhou harvested, when compared to what they would have normally been, up to a maximum of SSS-Rank. If the creator chooses an Armor Quinque, while that Quinque is equipped, the user will be able to transfer the Quinque's Strength to their own Stats. When made, the user will be able to choose two stats; the first choice is between Strength and Speed, while the second is between Resilience and Potency. The chosen stats will be set to a Rank equal to the Rank of the Quinque Armor while equipped, based on the chart below. Naturally, this will allow Humans and Half-Ghouls to reach SSS-Rank in their stats. While this might be the case, while equipped, the user will suffer a number of B-Rank wounds per post depending on the Rank of the Quinque Armor:
- B-Rank Armor will deal 1 B-Rank wound per post, and will grant one extra Rank to the chosen stats, up to SS-Rank.
- A-Rank Armor will deal 1 A-Rank wound per post, and will grant two extra Ranks to the chosen stats, up to SS-Rank.
- S-Rank Armor will deal 1 A-Rank wound and 1 B-Rank wound per post, and will grant two extra Ranks to the chosen stats, up to SS-Rank.
- SS-Rank Armor will deal 1 S-Rank wound per post, and will grant three extra Ranks to the chosen stats, up to SS-Rank.
- SSS-Rank Armor will deal 1 S-Rank wound and 1 B-Rank wound per post, and will grant three extra Ranks in the chosen stats.
Traits
Traits come in four different variants; Character Traits, Weapon Traits, Item Traits, and Special Traits. At every rank of Presence a character attains, they'll receive one Minor Character Trait. These Minor Traits can then be exchanged upon earning them for a Major Character Trait, at a cost of two Minor Traits for one Major one. Character Traits can only be earned through Ranking-Up Presence; they cannot be selected as apart of a Kagune or Quinque. Character Traits are those that generally define a character's own skill-set, and is usually independent from the use of their weapons. These can be effectively anything a character has a particular specialization in; whether that be sensory capabilities, a specialty in hacking, etc. Naturally, a character's applicable skill in those Traits is largely dependent on whether the trait is Minor or Major.
Minor Weapon Traits are small effects that a Kagune or Quinque is capable of producing, and are generally somewhat generic. Major Weapon Traits are either largely unique effects present only in the Kagune or Quinque in question, or are upgraded versions of Minor Traits. Either way, these Traits usually play a large role in combat. When creating a Kagune, a character will receive one Minor Trait for every other rank of Presence they have; B-Rank grants one Minor Weapon Trait, S-Rank grants another, and SSS-Rank grants a final one. Quinque follow the same pattern, except they are required to purchase these additional traits; a B-Rank, a Quinque can possess one Major and one Minor Trait, granted the creator is willing to pay for them. At S-Rank, they can possess an additional Major and Minor Trait, and finally at SSS-Rank, they can possess one more of each. Listed below are examples of Minor and Major Traits; the traits listed below are by no means the only ones a character can have access to. Upon creation, a character can choose to create their own Minor Traits, and later on when Evolving, characters can choose to create their own Major Traits. As more and more Traits are approved, they'll be added to the thread Traits Database. Listed below are a few examples, but are by no means the full, comprehensive lists of Traits. For more information on Traits, read the Trait Creation Guide.
{Minor Traits (Click me)}
- Detachable - A weapon with this Trait is able to be detached from the character, and wielded separately from the Kagune itself.
- Serrated - A weapon with this Trait is serrated, and is able to inflict bleeding wounds on a target. When hit from this Kagune, a target suffers one C-Rank wound every post, for three posts.
- Blunt - A weapon with this Trait is adept at smashing targets, and is able to inflict wounds to a target equal to the user's Resilience Rank, minus two, to a minimum of C-Rank.
- Prehensile - A weapon with this Trait is able to easily grab onto targets, as well as pick things up with ease.
- Simple Element - A weapon with this Trait is able to produce simple effects based on raw elements; producing small fires through superheating RC cells, heavily clumping RC cells together in order to produce a small electrical current, etc. This trait can inflict wounds based on the user's Potency, minus two, to a minimum of C-Rank.
- Numerous - A weapon with this Trait is able to produce an additional copy of itself, or an additional Kagune/blade of a similar shape. Ukaku, Koukaku, and Bikaku gain one additional Kagune/blade, while Rinkaku gains two. These additional Kagune/blades don't provide any statistical benefits, and simply function as an additional Kagune/blade with the same statistics and traits.
- Sensory Specialist - A character with this Trait has taken the time to hone their senses to an extraordinary level, allowing them to hear and distinguish the differences between all sounds within fifty feet of them, so long as they take the time to actively concentrate on these sounds and nothing else.
{Major Traits (Click me)}
- Remotely Activated - A weapon with this Trait possesses an ability that can be activated at-will, when detached from the Kagune itself. Upgraded version of "Detachable".
- Heavily Serrated - A weapon with this Trait is heavily serrated, and is able to inflict grievous wounds on a target. When hit from this Kagune, a target suffers one B-Rank wound every post, for three posts. Upgraded version of "Serrated".
- Heavy - A weapon with this Trait is especially adept at smashing targets, and is able to inflict wounds to a target equal to the user's Resilience Rank, minus one, to a minimum of C-Rank. Upgraded version of "Blunt".
- Grappler - A weapon with this Trait is especially skilled when it comes to grappling onto objects or people. When grappling onto something, this character's grip cannot be broken unless the person trying to possesses a superior Strength.
- Advanced Element - A weapon with this Trait is able to produce significant elemental effects based on raw elements; producing significant amounts of fire through superheating RC cells, heavily clumping RC cells together in order to produce a lightning-like bolt, etc. This trait can inflict wounds based on the user's Potency, minus one, to a minimum of C-Rank. Upgraded version of "Simple Element".
- Exponential - A weapon with this Trait is able to produce two additional copies of itself, or an additional two Kagune/blades of a similar shape. Ukaku, Koukaku, and Bikaku gain two additional Kagune/blade, while Rinkaku gain four. These additional Kagune/blades don't provide any statistical benefits, and simply function as an additional Kagune/blade with the same statistics and traits. Upgraded version of "Numerous".
- Sensory Expert - A character with this Trait has taken the time to hone their senses further beyond an extraordinary level, allowing them to hear and distinguish the differences between all sounds within fifty feet of them, even on the fly. Characters with this Trait can make use of it to determine the exact positions of objects or people through walls, hearing nearby heartbeats, etc. Upgraded version of "Sensory Specialist".
- Weapon Specialist - A Ghoul with this Trait has since learned the ins and outs of Investigator weaponry, and has since learned how to effectively wield a Quinque. The Ghoul in question is able to own and wield one Quinque, stolen from an RPC, or picked up from a dead RPC.
More information on Item and Special Traits are listed in the creation guide, linked above. In regards to Reserving Traits, this can be done, but only for Weapon Traits. Character Traits must remain unreserved. When a Trait is reserved, that means that you alone are able of taking that trait, unless permission is granted otherwise by you. This does not mean that others are unable to make something similar, following a similar theme and conventions, but you hold sole right over the way that your reserved trait has been made, and how it functions.
Evolution & Upgrades
As time goes on, Investigators and Ghouls alike are going to desire to upgrade their weapons. The latter of which might even occur naturally. Nonetheless, naturally we have a system in place for that. Or, at the very least, a series of steps for doing so. For Kagune, simply creating a thread in order to add on additional Traits as you increase in Presence is standard procedure. From there, simply request the thread be graded, and you'll be well on your way to obtaining a Kagune upgrade. Should Traits be switched out for one another, a Ryo cost is required to be paid. This cost is equal to the same cost as adding a new trait to a Quinque; 500 for a Minor Trait, and 1,000 for a Major Trait.
For Quinque, however, this process is a bit different. When upgrading a Quinque, you're required to destroy the original version of the Quinque in question. In addition to this, you're going to need at least one Kakuhou, to act as a catalyst for the upgrade. From there, a few different changes can be made as seen fit. Firstly, you're able to change the Rank of your Quinque, up to the rank of the Kakuhou used for the upgrade. Increasing the Rank of a Quinque is equal to the cost of crafting it from scratch at the newest rank. From there, you may choose to transfer over Traits from the previous version of the Quinque. All traits are transferred over for no cost, but removing traits from the original version costs Ryo to do; namely 500 for Minor Traits, and 1,000 for Major Traits. After that, additional traits can be added for the same Ryo cost of normally adding traits above. Using traits from the Kakuhou being used as a catalyst cost half the Ryo in order to implant onto the new Quinque. Regular Quinque can absolutely be upgraded into Kakuja Quinque, but do require a Kakuja Kakuhou in order to do. Once that's complete, your Quinque is then upgraded, and ready to be submitted for moderation!
