Character Lineages
Here on Shattered Dreams, there are a few different types of characters someone can choose to play, with each one being based off of a pre-existing "Lineage" already present in the Tokyo Ghoul canon. Those that are available are Humans, Ghouls, Half-Humans, and Half-Ghouls. Each one possesses their own individual benefits to being played, with no one choice being explicitly better than another. Each one is tailored to a certain play-style of sorts, and functions differently than the last. Some of these choices have additional choices that are made upon character creation, such as the ability to play as a Chimera.
Ghouls
When it comes to appearance, a Ghoul isn't much different from that of a Human. They generally look the same, and can easily pass as a Human under most circumstances. However, Ghouls are much, much different. For one, Ghouls do not possess the ability to eat normal foods; they produce a specific enzyme, preventing them from being able to digest normal foods. Even their tongues are different than that of a human, making anything and everything that isn't Human and Ghoul flesh taste absolutely atrocious. When consuming normal Human food, Ghouls are usually struck with a powerful urge to vomit. Some are able to prolong this and avoid reacting to it, as to allow them to further mask as a human being, but this isn't the case for every Ghoul. Aside from flesh, Ghouls are also known to be able to consume water, as well as coffee.
While this might be the case, Ghouls for the most part are usually able to thrive without food for extended periods of time. One adult human body is generally enough to feed a single Ghoul for about two months. While this might be the case, that's not to say Ghouls can't eat more; some go on to eat consistently, forming binge-eating habits over time. Naturally this can be considered incredibly dangerous, as drawing attention to oneself in such a way that could be putting them severely at risk to being found by an Investigator. Naturally something like that is far from optimal, and is recommended to be avoided by most in Ghoul culture.
Aside from their hunger and eating habits, Ghouls also possess a special organ known as a Kakuhou. A Kakuhou is an organ that mass-produces a special type of cells within a Ghoul's body known as RC cells, or Red Child cells. Humans and Ghouls alike produce RC cells, but Ghouls produce upwards of ten to twenty times more than humans are capable of producing; if a human has on average around 100 RC cells in a given area of their body, a Ghoul has 1,000. These cells are what make Ghouls effectively superhuman; high concentrations of RC cells within the body are what are able to make Ghouls supernaturally strong, fast, and resilient. This high concentration of RC cells also allow a Ghoul to produce a pseudo-limb known as a Kagune.
Kagune are the hunting organs of ghouls, and come in four different variants depending on a Ghoul's RC type; Ukaku, Koukaku, Rinkaku, and Bikaku. Each one naturally has their own benefits and drawbacks, giving them advantages in certain matchups as well as working to hinder them in certain fights as well. Knowing these matchups and the RC type of the opponents that one may encounter could easily mean the difference between life and death for any Ghoul, and is something that should be something that's considered carefully.
Ukaku Kagune are sprouted from the upper back, right around the shoulder blade, and usually take on an appearance similar to that of a wing, or set of wings. Typically speaking, Ukaku Ghouls are much faster than normal, and are generally focused around putting that speed to good use. While manifested, Ukaku Kagune grant a Ghoul better mobility, allowing them to glide around as they'd like thanks to having a wing or set of wings. Even without a wing-like shape, Ukaku Ghouls are still more naturally adept to movement. Ukaku Ghouls are unique due to the fact that they're the only type of Ghouls with an innate ranged attack. Ukaku Ghouls all have the ability to fire off crystallized shards of RC cells from their Kagune, making them deadly opponents at a range. Though, while this is the case, Ukaku Ghouls typically tend to struggle against Koukaku Ghouls, due to having a lower-than-average amount of stamina to work with, easily exhausting themselves before being able to break through a Koukaku Ghoul's defenses.
Koukaku Kagune are sprouted from the upper back, generally right below the shoulder blade, and usually take on a larger, much more weapon-like appearance than most other Kagune. Because of this, Koukaku Ghouls are generally much more well-built for combat, and make for phenomenal defenders. In addition to this, Koukaku Ghouls possess defenses that are much higher than average, allowing them to shrug off lesser hits as they come toward them. Koukaku Kagune are usually much larger and wider than other Kagune, allowing them to provide significant amounts of protection and cover against those that look to strike down a Koukaku Ghoul. Unfortunately, though, because of this size, Koukaku Kagune are usually much heavier than normal Kagune, acting to slow down a Koukaku user by a rather noteworthy amount. Additionally, their Kagune are usually most-suited for melee combat, and cause the Ghoul in question to struggle with ranged combat. Even despite their defenses, though, Rinkaku Ghouls usually excel against Koukaku Ghouls due to their ability to penetrate through a Koukaku's defenses with relative ease.
Rinkaku Kagune are sprouted from the waist, and are usually shaped as a group of tendrils, or something akin to that. Normally speaking, these tendrils are manifested as two, but depending on the ghoul, more may be created. Rinkaku Ghouls are unique due to the nature of their RC cells being much more "liquid" than the other three types of Ghouls, and are much more malleable in shape than what might normally be expected. Rinkaku also possess the ability to pierce through most other Kagune with relative ease, making them excellent attackers, especially when paired with their inherent ability to exploit the weaknesses of other Ghouls. While this might be the case, though, the liquid nature of their RC cells also acts as a weakness of sorts; Rinkaku Ghouls are generally much less durable than their counterparts, and struggle to take direct hits. In turn, though, they possess a higher regenerative capability, allowing them to recover from the wounds that will likely leave them heavily damaged. Due to their lack of an ability to take a hit, Rinkaku Ghouls are usually outmatched by Bikaku Ghouls, who can fight against a Rinkaku Ghoul without having an apparent weakness to be exploited.
Bikaku Kagune are sprouted on the tailbone, and tend to be shaped akin to that of a tail. Usually Bikaku are manifested as one tendril, but depending on the ghoul, this could vary. Bikaku Ghouls generally act as a sort of "jack-of-all-trades", having no set advantages over other Ghouls, but also having no noteworthy weaknesses when compared to others. Bikaku Ghouls are generally relatively powerful in all areas, though most generally develop an area to focus in as time goes on, and they learn more about their own capabilities. While Bikaku Ghouls might seem generally the most all-rounder, they do tend to struggle against Ukaku Ghouls, due to a Ukaku Ghoul's inherent speed benefits; most of the time, Bikaku Ghouls will struggle to keep up with a Ukaku blitz.
While generally speaking, most Ghouls only have one type of Kagune, there are rare circumstances in which Ghouls will actually be born with the Kagune of both of their parents, forming what's known as a Chimera. Chimera are exactly as previously stated; they possess two different types of Kagune. Naturally, a benefit like this isn't without its fair share of weaknesses. While Chimera do get the benefits of having two different types of Kagune, they also possess the draws of having those same Kagune; A Koukaku-Rinkaku Chimera will certainly be well-suited to combat, and will likely be able to pierce through the defenses of others Kagune, but they're likely to be very slow, and fairly frail themselves.
Ghouls also possess access to something known as Kakuja. Kakuja acts as a sort of "Evolution" to a Ghoul's normal Kagune. Kakuja come from the act of cannibalizing other Ghouls. From consuming the Kakuhou of other ghouls in significant amounts, and consuming the RC cells from those Kakuhou, a Ghoul might be able to mutate into a Kakuja due to the influx of RC cells in their body. Typically, Kakuja are manifested first into Half-Kakuja, and then later upgraded to Full-Kakuja. Half-Kakuja are generally incomplete, and function more as an offensive tool than anything else. Those that enter a Half-Kakuja state are generally at a loss for control over themselves, and end up succumbing to instinct. Full-Kakuja takes the original Kakuja a step further, however; usually they're gained after having fully mastered a Half-Kakuja, and continuing to cannibalize after that. A Full-Kakuja generally means that a Ghoul is able to maintain control over their Half-Kakuja, and now has an additional, likely more defensive stage to show for it.
Humans
Humans are exactly as one would expect; ordinary, everyday humans. They live much like you and I, and act effectively the exact same. Naturally, humans don't possess any sort of superior capabilities just for existing, but have the potential to grow into something that can still hold their own with anyone and everyone they have the pleasure of coming across. Humans themselves possess an incredible fighting spirit, making them potentially tough and exponentially versatile foes to deal with. A fully-upgraded Human is practically guaranteed to far surpass the other three races in terms of sheer versatility, even if they can't naturally keep up in regards to the stats of the other races.
Humans are special in that they tend to wield Quinque, as opposed to having that of a Kagune. Quinque are interesting in the fact that they're made from a Ghoul's Kakuhou. Because of this, Quinque are naturally as durable as that of a Kagune, and serve as the primary method of attack against Ghouls of all kinds, considering their exceptional durability against everything else. Much like Kagune, Quinque come in four different main variants, with each one following certain guidelines when being made into a weapon based on their RC Type. Though, while Ghouls don't have a tide-turning advantage when fighting to their natural strengths, Quinque are made much more stronger against those naturally weak to them.
Ukaku Quinque are predominantly those that are used to make ranged attacks. Generally speaking, these are going to be your firearms, crossbows, or some other very light weapon with the potential to make a ranged attack, like the Owl Quinque from the Canon. These weapons are usually designed around the ability to use them quickly, or to attack from a distance against those that they need to. Generally speaking, these weapons will be favored by those that tend to prefer to not engage directly, or to do so with absolutely blinding speeds. Ukaku Quinque have a natural advantage against Bikaku Ghouls, being able to take advantage of their lack of range and their inability to keep up with that of a Ukaku Quinque user.
Koukaku Quinque are those that are much larger, or generally more defensive in nature. Most typically, Koukaku Quinque are going to be your Greatswords, Greataxes, Warhammers, as well as even shields. Most of the time, Koukaku Quinque are those that are predominantly used for heavy attacks, or for impenetrable defenses. Those that prefer to wield these Quinque are usually those that are heavily spec'd into Strength, and are looking to deal heavy amounts of damage with large weapons, or are spec'd into Resilience, and are looking to be able to protect themselves and their allies with surprising efficiency. Koukaku Quinque have a natural advantage against Ukaku Ghouls, who tend to overexert themselves before being able to get through a Koukaku user's defenses.
Rinkaku Quinque are generally going to be melee weapons that tend to function either as a sort of "fluid" weapon, or are generally focused on piercing. Most Rinkaku weapons are going to be that of whips, daggers, rapiers, and any other weapon aimed to pierce through skin and flesh as easily as possible. Most that enjoy Rinkaku Quinque are going to be those that enjoy fast-paced combat, but like to lean more into the damage they can deal with their Quinque, as opposed to the speed granted from a Ukaku Quinque. Rinkaku Quinque possess a natural advantage over Koukaku Kagune, being able to make use of their natural ability to break through defenses like a hot knife in butter.
Bikaku Quinque are those that are effectively the "all-rounders". Much like their Kagune counterparts, Bikaku Quinque are those that don't really have a defined specialization, but are pretty okay overall at pretty much everything they're able to do. Bikaku Quinque are generally going to be the "everything else" category, encompassing unique weapons like scythes or net launchers, as well as a bit of everything else, including but not limited to swords, daggers, axes, and just about anything else you can really think of. Bikaku Quinque are for those that like to really make the versatility of Quinque stand out, and capitalize on really unique weaponry. Bikaku Quinque are direct counters to that of Rinkaku Kagune, being able to exploit a Rinkaku Ghoul's less-durable than average Kagune to their advantage.
Half-Ghouls
Half-Ghouls are one of the two options for those characters that are effectively the "best of both worlds". Half-Ghouls encompass two particular types of characters; that of naturally-born Half-Ghouls, and those of artificially created Half-Ghouls, occasionally referred to as Quinx. Both of these options are available on this forum, and each come with their own basic origin, depending on the one that is chosen. Additionally, the number of Quinque a Half-Ghoul may use is heavily dependent on their Organization, instead of their Lineage. Non-CCG Half-Ghouls can only wield a Quinque through specific Traits, while CCG Half-Ghouls can wield up to three Quinque, at SSS-Ranked Presence. Half-Ghouls are also able to naturally manifest a Kagune, whether they're born with a Kakuhou or have one implanted into them. Unlike regular Ghouls, that possess two Kakugan, Half-Ghouls only possess one, affectionately giving them the nickname "One-Eyed Ghouls".
Naturally-born Half-Ghouls are those that have been born into the world to one Ghoul parent, and one Human parent. Generally speaking, naturally-born Half-Ghouls are exceedingly rare, for a number of reasons. Firstly, it's incredibly hard for a Ghoul and a Human to actually manage to have a Half-Ghoul child; or any child at all, for that matter. With a Human father and a Ghoul mother, pregnancy generally becomes incredibly difficult because as the child develops, the mother's body will mistakenly consider the unborn child as food, and begin to absorb it as nutrition. The way to deal with this, is for that Ghoul mother to to force herself to consume human food in order to weaken her body, which is something that most Ghouls struggle with significantly.
In the case of having a Human mother and a Ghoul father, a pregnancy is still made incredibly difficult as the unborn child will struggle significantly to receive the necessary nutrients in order to survive. The way around this, however, is for the Human mother to engage in cannibalism. Naturally this raises a lot of ethical flags, and is likely something that a lot will be very unwilling to do under most circumstances. Should she be willing to do so, though, the child will begin to receive the nutrients necessary, making birth a lot more probable, though most of the time resulting in a child that is more Human than Ghoul.
In the case of artificially-created Half-Ghouls, this is a process generally done through the CCG's Q Squad. This process is simple; those that are deemed eligible by having a higher-than-average RC cell count within them will be given the option to have a Kakuhou implanted within them. If they survive this process, they will become an artificially-created Half-Ghoul. In order to help prevent their RC cell count from spiraling out of control, artificial Half-Ghouls generally keep their Kagune locked in "frames", limiting their power so they don't lose control.
Quinx Kagune are locked into five different stages; Frame 1 (or F1), Frame 2 (or F2), Frame 3 (or F3), Frame 4 (or F4), and Frame 5 (or F5). Frame 1 limits their Kagune's strength to 20%, Frame 2 is 40%, Frame 3 is 60%, Frame 4 is 80%, and Frame 5 allows for 100% of a Kagune's strength to be used at any given point. On the flip side, though, forcing into these Frames without the proper care or training grants a Half-Ghoul the potential to "Frame-Out". When this occurs, a Half-Ghoul will lose control, and effectively become a mindless beast, driven solely for their desire of flesh. When a Frame-Out occurs, a Half-Ghoul is considered to be an S-Rated threat, and is issued a "Kill-on-Sight" order by the CCG.
Naturally, there are plenty of differences between natural and artificial Half-Ghouls. For one, natural Half-Ghouls generally smell like that of humans to those with the ability to determine the difference from scent, while artificial Half-Ghouls usually smell much more like that of Ghouls. Natural Half-Ghouls also enjoy the luxury of being able to eat human food, while also reaping the benefits from consuming both Human and Ghoul flesh. On the other hand, due to the overwhelming nature of an artificial Ghoul's RC count, they are only able to consume flesh instead of also being able to maintain a human diet.
Half-Humans
Half-Humans are the second option for those wishing to play off of the "best of both worlds" idea. Unlike Half-Ghouls, who embrace their Ghoul side and are able to make use of a Kagune, Half-Humans are those that embrace the physical capabilities of Ghouls, and possess a much higher than average affinity toward anything and everything physical in nature. Naturally, this comes with a cost; because of the added stress being put on their body at all times, and because of their Human body wearing down on the Ghoul cells inside of them, Half-Humans age at an incredibly exponential rate, going as far as to losing eyesight as early as the age of 30, and likely being dead from natural causes by age 50.
Half-Humans are not artificially created. Instead, they are born naturally, and done most of the time by the CCG, through a project called the Sunlit Garden. The Sunlit Garden is a facility located well-beneath the CCG headquarters, where "Gifted Children" are raised and honed. These "gifted children" are all Half-Humans, brought into the world through the addition of copulation, usually through a Ghoul Father and Human Mother. The result, should the child gestate without any problem and manage to make it to birth, will result in a Half-Human.
Half-Humans are generally affiliated with the CCG out of the nature of their existence. While it's not unheard of to defect from the CCG, those who make that decision are generally put on a priority hitlist by the CCG themselves. As such, most are "coerced" into making use of their gifted physical talents as members of the CCG, taught to eradicate Ghoul life. Whether or not they follow those teaching is naturally on a case-by-case basis, but is still likely to be influenced in some way or another through their very existence.
Half-Humans are generally very much unknown to the general populace, and are seen as normal humans most of the time. They're fully capable of eating human food, and cannot manifest a Kagune or Kakugan. Most of the time, Half-Humans don't even possess a Kakuhou. Though, while that's the case, Half-Humans do possess a fairly high RC cell count, and will generally show up as Ghouls through RC cell scans done. Other than that, very little is known about Half-Humans as a race. They're typically wielders of Quinque, and can comfortably hold more than a Half-Ghoul, but not quite as much as a Human.
