Stats & Ranks
Statistics, or Stats, are various measurements that every character has that is used to determine certain traits and aspects about your character. These stats are all measured through a letter grade, with each letter grade meaning something different. Tokyo Ghoul: Shattered Dreams has 6 different key stats; those stats are Strength, Speed, Aim, Resilience, Presence, and Potency. Each stat will hold a letter value in between and including ranks from C to SSS. What those stats do and what they mean will differ depending on what rank in each stat a character holds. Naturally, the closer to SSS that a stat is, the more potent the stat in question is naturally going to be. A rough outlining of each rank is listed below, with a more in-depth version covering each stat specifically in the specific sections for those stats.
- C-Rank represents a stat that is considered below-average for a human being. C-Ranked stats are usually a detriment of sorts, and a key flaw that a character has. While absolutely not optimal, having a C-Ranked stat is by no means the end of the world, as they're generally fairly easy to upgrade.
- B-Rank represents a stat that is considered to be average for a human being. B-Ranked stats represent what a normal person would be able to do without any intensive amount of training toward that specific stat, or anything of the like. This is considered to be the baseline for most starting characters.
- A-Rank represents a stat that is a bit above-average for a human being, and average for a ghoul most of the time. A-Ranked stats are usually on the stronger side of things, allowing a character a more intensive application of their abilities with that particular stat.
- S-Rank represents a stat that is notably above average for a human being, and a bit above average for a ghoul. S-Ranked stats are usually equivalent to being the best at that stat in a given city, and are usually the results of a rather extreme amount of mastery over that particular field.
- SS-Rank represents a stat that is at the absolute peak for a human being, and notably above average for a ghoul. SS-Ranked stats are usually the equivalent at being the best at that stat in a character's home country, and usually border a supernatural mastery over the field in question.
- SSS-Rank represents a stat that is supernaturally strong for a human being, and is at the absolute height of power for a ghoul. SSS-Ranked stats are usually the equivalent at being the best at that stat on a given continent, and most of the time will surpass a supernatural mastery over that stat, allowing for the unthinkable to be performed with that stat.
As one would expect, each and every character also has what's known as a Personal Rank. This Rank represents a character's general notoriety, their skill, and their general aptitude outside of the standard Stats. Because Personal Ranks and Stat Ranks are different, it's absolutely possible for a character with SSS-Ranked Stats across the board to only have a Personal Rank of C. The opposite is also possible, but might not necessarily be as applicable. Increasing your Personal Rank is entirely tied to the threads you complete; if you manage to beat a S-Ranked Ghoul, for example, there stands little reason as to why you wouldn't obtain at the very least A-Rank, if not potentially S-Rank off of that fight. The same can be said for most any thread type; completing more challenging threads and scenarios will net higher rank.
Strength
Strength is a measure of a character's physical prowess, and their ability to strike in the midst of combat. Strength affects things like a character's ability to cause damage with a Kagune or Quinque, their ability to cause damage to a specific area, as well as more mundane things like the amount of weight a character can reasonably carry at a given time. A character's Strength only determines their offensive potential with attacks in combat; it does not determine their physical durability. The stat predominantly used for that is Resilience instead.
When Strength is at C-Rank, a character is considered to be weaker than an average human, and will generally only be able to lift about half of their own body weight. C-Ranked Strength, when used in combat, will only inflict one C-Ranked wound to a target, and does not have the potential to deal more while at this rank. Characters with a C-Rank in Strength are extremely unlikely to possess much of an ability to affect their environment with this stat, and will likely have to make use of their other stats in order to be effective.
When Strength is at B-Rank, a character is considered to be about as strong as an average adult human male. They'll generally be able to lift up to 1.5x their body weight. B-Ranked Strength, when used in combat, is able to inflict one B-Rank wound to a target per post, or up to two C-Rank wounds. Characters with a B-Rank in Strength are generally going to be more well-off than those with a C-Rank in Strength, but still won't have access to much of anything noteworthy. Chances are, their ability to affect their environment is going to be very slim.
When Strength is at A-Rank, a character is considered to be stronger than the average human. They'll usually be able to lift up to 2x their body weight. A-Ranked Strength, when used in combat, is able to inflict one A-Rank wound to a target per post, up to two B-Rank wounds, or up to four C-Rank wounds. Characters with an A-Rank in Strength are considered to be just below Olympian-level, and, should they desire, could potentially cause pretty noteworthy amounts of damage to the area around them, including but not limited to significant damage to walls, potentially cracking the pavement on a strike, etc.
When Strength is at S-Rank, a character is considered to be absurdly strong for a human being. They'll usually be able to lift up to 3x their body weight, and can potentially throw lighter objects hundreds of feet away. S-Ranked Strength, when used in combat, is able to inflict one S-Rank wound to a target per post, up to two A-Rank wounds, up to four B-Rank wounds, or up to eight C-Rank wounds. Characters with an S-Rank in Strength are considered to be low-level Olympians, and can easily cause significant damage to the world around them, including putting dents in vehicles, damaging the structural integrity of buildings, etc.
When Strength is at SS-Rank, a character is considered to be at the absolute pinnacle for a human being. They'll usually be able to lift up to 4x their body weight, and can easily launch heavier objects with ease. SS-Ranked Strength, when used in combat, is able to inflict one SS-Rank wound to a target per post, up to two S-Rank wounds, up to four A-Rank wounds, up to eight B-Rank wounds, or up to sixteen C-Rank wounds. Characters with an SS-Rank in Strength are considered to be high-level Olympians, and can easily cause devastating damage to the world around them, including picking up vehicles, effectively leveling buildings, etc.
When Strength is at SSS-Rank, a character is considered to have surpassed what's normally considered possible for a human being. They'll usually be able to lift up to 5x their body weight, and can easily launch small vehicles with ease. SSS-Ranked Strength, when used in combat, is able to inflict one SSS-Rank wound to a target per post, up to two SS-Rank wounds, up to four S-Rank wounds, up to eight A-Rank wounds, up to sixteen B-Rank wounds, or up to thirty-two C-Rank wounds. Characters with an SSS-Rank in Strength are considered to have bypassed the Olympic standard, and can easily cause significantly catastrophic damage to the world around them, easily leveling multiple buildings with minimal effort required.
Speed
Speed is a measure of how fast a character can move, think, and attack with ease. Speed will affect a character's movement speed, their ability to dodge incoming attacks, their mental processing power, and the speed at which attacks made by them function. The higher Speed is, the better a character will become at all of these things; they'll be able to move faster, more accurately dodge attacks, think faster, and attack faster. Speed itself is naturally a strong stat, but definitely isn't without its own set of checks. The higher a character's speed, and the faster that character moves at consistently, the more stamina that character is going to burn, eventually working to tire them out at an expedited pace when compared to a character that isn't able to move that fast. Speed also determines the "comfortable" amount of attacks a character is able to make in melee without exerting Stamina to do so. This functions identically to that of the Aim stat.
When Speed is at C-Rank, a character is considered to be below average for a human being. They'll usually be much slower than that of an average adult, and tend to struggle with maintaining a sprint. Characters with C-Ranked Speed will not be able to dodge with ease, and will exert 3 Stamina each time they look to dodge an attack. Attacks made with C-Ranked Speed are usually fairly slow, and relatively easy to pick up on when made. A character with C-Ranked Speed will generally only have a top speed of around 5-10 miles per hour. Characters with C-Ranked Speed are also unable to comfortably make more than one attack per post, and will be required to exert 3 Stamina in order to do so comfortably.
When Speed is at B-Rank, a character is considered to be average for a human being. They'll generally be able to maintain a sprint for a short amount of time, and can move as fast as the average adult. Characters with B-Ranked Speed are able to dodge with ease once every other post; dodging more than that will cause that character to exert 3 Stamina. Attacks made with B-Ranked Speed are generally fairly average, and can still be picked up on with ease. A character with B-Ranked Speed will generally have a top speed of around 11-15 miles per hour. Characters with B-Ranked Speed are also able to comfortably make an attack once per post, and are able to do so without exerting Stamina, but any additional attacks per post will cost 3 Stamina to make.
When Speed is at A-Rank, a character is considered to be a bit above average for a human being. They'll be able to maintain a longer sprint, and will generally show faster speeds than one might expect for a human. Characters with A-Ranked Speed are able to dodge with ease once every other post; dodging more than that will cause that character to exert 2 Stamina. Attacks made with A-Ranked Speed are slightly above average, and might start to blur to the normal human eye. A character with A-Ranked Speed will generally have a top speed of around 16-20 miles per hour. Characters with A-Ranked Speed are also able to comfortably make an attack twice per post, and are able to do so without exerting Stamina, but any additional attacks per post will cost 2 Stamina to make.
When Speed is at S-Rank, a character is considered to be notably above average for a human. They'll be able to sprint for decently long periods of time, and are comparable to a low-level Olympian runner. Characters with S-Ranked Speed will be able to dodge with ease up to two times every two posts; dodging more than that will cause that character to exert 2 Stamina. Attacks made with S-Ranked Speed are notably above average, and will likely begin to blur to the untrained eye. A character with S-Ranked Speed will generally have a top speed of around 21-25 miles per hour. Characters with S-Ranked Speed are also able to comfortably make an attack thrice per post, and are able to do so without exerting Stamina, but any additional attacks per post will cost 2 Stamina to make.
When Speed is at SS-Rank, a character is considered to be at the absolute peak of what's possible for a human. They'll be able to sprint long-distance, and are comparable to a high-end Olympian runner. Characters with SS-Ranked Speed will be able to dodge with ease up to two times every two posts; dodging more than that will cause that character to exert 1 Stamina. Attacks made with SS-Ranked Speed are significantly above average, and will blur to those that aren't used to functioning at this speed. Those within two Speed Ranks will be able to see these strikes as normal. A character with SS-Ranked Speed will generally have a top speed of around 26-30 miles per hour. Characters with SS-Ranked Speed are also able to comfortably make an attack up to four times per post, and are able to do so without exerting Stamina, but any additional attacks per post will cost 1 Stamina to make.
When Speed is at SSS-Rank, a character is considered to have reached supernatural heights compared to what's normally possible for a human. They'll be able to hold a sprint nigh-indefinitely, and will have surpassed the Olympic standard. Characters with SSS-Ranked Speed are able to dodge up to three times every two posts; dodging more than that will cause that character to exert 1 Stamina. Attacks made with SSS-Ranked Speed tend to surpass human limits, and will likely blur to those that have anything below SS-Ranked Speed. A character with SSS-Ranked Speed will generally have a top speed around 31-40 miles per hour. Characters with SSS-Ranked Speed are also able to comfortably make an attack up to five times per post, and are able to do so without exerting Stamina, but any additional attacks per post will cost 1 Stamina to make.
Aim
Aim is a measure of how accurately a character is able to land a strike against the odds placed against them, and acts as an alternative to Speed for the purpose of attacking at a distance. Having a higher Aim also means that a character gains experience with lining up their ranged attacks, allowing them to do so faster and eventually be able to land multiple attacks in a short amount of time with ease. Characters with high Aim are generally those that enjoy landing attacks at a range, and those that prefer to keep out of the way of harm. Aim is used to determine a character's ability to land attacks at a distance; if you're looking to attack faster in melee, invest in Speed.
When Aim is at C-Rank, a character is considered to be below average when compared to a normal human being. Characters with C-Ranked Aim will generally take much longer to set up shots than the average person, and usually can't comfortably get off a shot without requiring some sort of Stamina cost when doing so. Characters with C-Ranked Aim are also unable to comfortably make more than one attack per post, and will be required to exert 3 Stamina in order to do so comfortably.
When Aim is at B-Rank, a character is considered to be about average when compared to that of a normal human being. Characters with B-Ranked Aim will generally be able to set up a shot against those equal to them, allowing them to make attacks against characters with B-Ranked Speed or less without requiring a Stamina cost to do so. Characters with B-Ranked Aim are also able to comfortably make an attack once per post, and are able to do so without exerting Stamina, but any additional attacks per post will cost 3 Stamina to make.
When Aim is at A-Rank, a character is considered to be slightly above average when compared to a normal human being. Characters with A-Ranked Aim will generally be able to set up a shot against those equal to them, allowing them to make attacks against characters with A-Ranked Speed or less without requiring a Stamina cost to do so. Characters with A-Ranked Aim are also able to comfortably make an attack twice per post, and are able to do so without exerting Stamina, but any additional attacks per post will cost 2 Stamina to make.
When Aim is at S-Rank, a character is considered to be notably above average when compared to a normal human being. Characters with S-Ranked Aim will generally be able to set up a shot against those equal to them, allowing them to make attacks against characters with S-Ranked Speed or less without requiring a Stamina cost to do so. Characters with S-Ranked Aim are also able to comfortably make an attack thrice per post, and are able to do so without exerting Stamina, but any additional attacks per post will cost 2 Stamina to make.
When Aim is at SS-Rank, a character is considered to be at the peak of what a normal human being would be capable of. Characters with SS-Ranked Aim will generally be able to set up a shot against those equal to them, allowing them to make attacks against characters with SS-Ranked Speed or less without requiring a Stamina cost to do so. Characters with SS-Ranked Aim are also able to comfortably make an attack up to four times per post, and are able to do so without exerting Stamina, but any additional attacks per post will cost 1 Stamina to make.
When Aim is at SSS-Rank, a character is considered to have surpassed normal human limits and reached a supernatural mastery. Characters with SSS-Ranked Aim will generally be able to set up a shot against those equal to them, allowing them to make attacks against characters with SSS-Ranked Speed or less without requiring a Stamina cost to do so. Characters with SSS-Ranked Aim are also able to comfortably make an attack up to five times per post, and are able to do so without exerting Stamina, but any additional attacks per post will cost 1 Stamina to make.
Resilience
Resilience is a measure of just how durable a character is, and how much Stamina they possess. Characters with higher Resilience are able to withstand many more attacks than those that have a lower Resilience, and also possess more Stamina than those with a lower Resilience. This stat is effectively the "Health" stat of Shattered Dreams, so it's generally one that helps when invested in. Characters with lower Resilience aren't necessarily weaker, and can certainly go toe-to-toe with characters with higher Resilience; they're just generally built around the idea of not taking a hit. When a character takes more wounds than they're able to, or spend more Stamina than they have, they're considered removed from a fight, and are at the mercy of their opponent(s).
When Resilience is at C-Rank, a character is considered to be exceptionally frail for a human being. Characters with C-Ranked Resilience usually aren't able to withstand very many attacks, and can only take two C-Rank wounds before being taken out of a fight. Characters with C-Ranked Resilience only grants a character 20 Stamina to spend over the duration of a thread, or between significant rest periods in longer-styled threads.
When Resilience is at B-Rank, a character is considered to be of an average durability compared to a human being. Characters with B-Ranked Resilience are able to withstand a few more blows, and can collectively take one B-Rank wound, plus one C-Rank wound before being taken out of a fight. Characters with B-Ranked Resilience are given 30 Stamina to spend over the duration of a thread, or between significant rest periods in longer-styled threads.
When Resilience is at A-Rank, a character is considered to be slightly above average compared to a normal human being. Characters with A-Ranked Resilience are able to shrug off a fairly noteworthy amount of blows, and can collectively take one A-Rank wound, plus one C-Rank wound before being taken out of a fight. Characters with A-Ranked Resilience are given 40 Stamina to spend over the duration of a thread, or between significant rest periods in longer-styled threads.
When Resilience is at S-Rank, a character is considered to be notably above average when compared to a normal human being. Characters with S-Ranked Resilience are able to shrug off significant amounts of damage, and can collectively take one S-Rank wound, plus one C-Rank wound before being taken out of a fight. Characters with S-Ranked Resilience are given 50 Stamina to spend over the duration of a thread, or between significant rest periods in longer-styled threads.
When Resilience is at SS-Rank, a character is considered to be at the absolute peak of what's considered possible for that of a human being. Characters with SS-Ranked Resilience are able to power through potentially lethal damage and still keep fighting, and can collectively take one SS-Rank wound, plus one C-Rank wound before being taken out of a fight. Characters with SS-Ranked Resilience are given 60 Stamina to spend over the duration of a thread, or between significant rest periods in longer-styled threads.
When Resilience is at SSS-Rank, a character is considered to have surpassed what is normally possible for a human being, and errs on supernatural amounts of resistance to damage. Characters with SSS-Ranked Resilience are able to shrug off usually fatal blows, and can collectively take one SSS-Rank wound, plus one C-Rank wound before being taken out of a fight. Characters with SSS-Ranked Resilience are given 70 Stamina to spend over the duration of a thread, or between significant rest periods in longer-styled threads.
Presence
Presence is a measure of a character's force of personality, their creative mind, the uniqueness of their Kagune, and/or the uniqueness of the Quinque they're able to wield. Presence also represents a character's influence over the world around them in a social and political sense. Characters with higher Presence are generally those that are more influential, more capable of leading a group, and more likely to be able to successfully exert their will over a group of people in order to form allies or make enemies step down. Presence itself acts as a sort of social stat when dealing with Non-Playable Characters, allows for more customization with a character's Kagune/Quinque, and grants more rewards when holding down and defending territories.
When Presence is at C-Rank, a character is considered to have below average social skills and a general lack of creativity. Characters with C-Ranked Presence will generally struggle when it comes to convincing other people to ally with them if they're not already willing, are relatively unknown for the most part, and are far from capable when it comes to being able to lead. Characters with C-Ranked Presence are followers more often than not, and don't really have anything special when it comes to their Kagune or Quinque. C-Ranked Presence allows a character to possess one Minor Character Trait, whether that's something simple like increased sensory ability, hacking skill, etc. These unique traits are described in more detail in the section Kagune, Quinque, and You. Ryo rewards from holding down, defending, or attacking territories is multiplied by 0.75x, to show this lack of aptitude.
When Presence is at B-Rank, a character is considered to have average social skills, and a somewhat creative mind. Characters with B-Ranked Presence will generally be able to talk to others with relative ease, and have a somewhat okay chance at being able to convince others to ally with them if they're not already willing. Characters with a B-Rank in Presence are still relatively unknown, but may make a name for themselves out of those in a small area or territory. B-Ranked Presence allows a character to possess two Minor Character Traits. At any point, two Minor Character Traits can be upgraded into a Major Character Trait by spending those slots to do so. Ryo rewards from holding down, defending, or attacking territories is multiplied by 1x.
When Presence is at A-Rank, a character is considered to have above average social skills, and the ability to think fairly creatively and innovatively. Characters with A-Ranked Presence will generally be able to lead a small group with ease, and have a fairly decent chance at being able to convince others to ally with them if they're not already willing. Characters with an A-Rank in Presence have begun to make a name for themselves, and are likely to be well-known in their district or ward. A-Ranked Presence is a requirement for a character looking to start as a Chimera or possess a Chimera Quinque at some point, and allows a character to possess Three Minor Character Traits. Ryo rewards from holding down, defending, or attacking territories is multiplied by 1.25x.
When Presence is at S-Rank, a character is considered to have quite a silver tongue of sorts, possessing much higher than average social skills, and an incredibly creative mind. Characters with S-Ranked Presence will generally be able to lead a larger group of people with relative ease, and have a fairly strong chance at being able to convince others to ally with them if they're not already willing. Characters with an S-Rank in Presence have likely established a rather well-known reputation for themselves, whether that be good or bad, and are likely going to be well-known across multiple districts or wards. S-Ranked Presence allows a character to possess four Minor Character Traits. Ryo rewards from holding down, defending, or attacking territories is multiplied by 1.5x.
When Presence is at SS-Rank, a character is considered to be extremely influential across multiple districts or wards, and possess an incredible knack for creativity. Characters with SS-Ranked Presence will generally be able to lead and manage a small organization with ease, and have an incredible chance to convince others to ally with them if they're not already willing. Characters with an SS-Rank in Presence are likely to be incredibly well-known across an entire state or region, and can likely invoke that reputation when need be with ease. SS-Ranked Presence allows a character to possess five Minor Character Traits. Ryo rewards from holding down, defending, or attacking territories is multiplied by 1.75x.
When Presence is at SSS-Rank, a character is considered to have an almost supernatural way with words, and an unrivaled creative mind. Characters with SSS-Ranked Presence will generally be able to lead and manage a large-scale organization with ease, and have a nigh-immeasurable chance to convince others to ally with them if they're not already willing. Characters with an SSS-Rank in Presence are likely to be exceedingly well-known across an entire country, and can easily invoke that reputation to get most anything they could need. SS-Ranked Presence allows a character to possess six Minor Character Traits. Ryo rewards from holding down, defending, or attacking territories is multiplied by 2x.
Potency
Potency is a measure of a Character's raw combative potential and other abilities. What this means for a character is dependent on what exactly that character is; for Ghouls and Half-Ghouls, Potency measures how strong their regeneration is, and the strength of their Kakuja, should they possess one. For Humans and Half-Humans, Potency represents the number of Quinque a character can bring into battle at any given time, and is used to keep track of what Kakuja Quinque a character can make use of. For any non-physical and all ranged attacks, Potency is the Stat used instead of Strength to determine how many Wounds would otherwise be afflicted.
When Potency is at C-Rank, characters are considered to be below average in terms of what their combat potential. Ghouls and Half-Ghouls will only be able to restore one C-Rank wound per post through regeneration, and will not be able to become Kakuja. Humans will have a Quinque Capacity of 2, and Half-Humans and Half-Ghouls will have a Quinque Capacity of 1, detailed in Kagune, Quinque, and You, and will not be able to make use of Kakuja Quinque. Characters with C-Ranked Potency are generally those that have other focuses aside from combat, and generally prefer to stay off the battlefield if they can help it.
When Potency is at B-Rank, characters are considered to be average at fighting, and the abilities that come with that. Ghouls and Half-Ghouls will be able to recover one B-Rank wound or two C-Rank wounds per post, and will be able to become a B-Rank Kakuja if they meet the requirements. Humans will have a Quinque Capacity of 4, Half-Humans will have a Quinque Capacity of 2, Half-Ghouls will have a Quinque Capacity of 1, and all of these three will be able to make use of B-Ranked Kakuja Quinque. Characters with B-Ranked Potency are generally those that are comfortable with the idea of fighting, but have very little to no combat experience to show for it.
When Potency is at A-Rank, characters are considered to be slightly above average at fighting, and the abilities that come with that. Ghouls and Half-Ghouls will be able to recover up to one full A-Rank wound per post, either by directly recovering an A-Rank wound, or through a combination of B & C-Rank wounds, and will be able to become an A-Rank Kakuja if they meet the requirements. Humans will have a Quinque Capacity of 6, Half-Humans will have a Quinque Capacity of 3, Half-Ghouls will have a Quinque Capacity of 2, and all of these three will be able to make use of A-Ranked Kakuja Quinque. Characters with A-Ranked Potency are generally those who have both studied and familiarized themselves with their fighting style, and have a bit of combat experience to show for it.
When Potency is at S-Rank, characters are considered to be notably above average at fighting, and the abilities that come with that. Ghouls and Half-Ghouls will be able to recover up to one full S-Rank wound per post, and will be able to become an S-Rank Kakuja if they meet the requirements. Humans will have a Quinque Capacity of 8, Half-Humans will have a Quinque Capacity of 4, Half-Ghouls will have a Quinque Capacity of 2, and all of these three will be able to make use of S-Ranked Kakuja Quinque. Characters with S-Ranked Potency are generally those who have mastered their own fighting capabilities, and have been in quite a number of fights for the experience.
When Potency is at SS-Rank, characters are considered to be at the peak of human prowess when it comes to fighting, and the abilities that come with that. Ghouls and Half-Ghouls will be able to recover up to one full SS-Rank wound per post, and will be able to become an SS-Rank Kakuja if they meet the requirements. Humans will have a Quinque Capacity of 10, Half-Humans will have a Quinque Capacity of 5, Half-Ghouls will have a Quinque Capacity of 3, and all of these three will be able to make use of SS-Ranked Kakuja Quinque. Characters with SS-Ranked Potency are those who are extensive veterans to combat, and have since walked away with quite a few wins under their belt.
When Potency is at SSS-Rank, characters are considered to be at a supernatural level of mastery over combat as a whole. Ghouls and Half-Ghouls will be able to recover up to one full SSS-Rank wound per post, and will be able to become an SSS-Rank Kakuja if they meet the requirements. Humans will have a Quinque Capacity of 12, Half-Humans will have a Quinque Capacity of 6, Half-Ghouls will have a Quinque Capacity of 3, and all of these three will be able to make use of SSS-Ranked Kakuja Quinque. Characters with SSS-Ranked Potency are those that have become quite well-renowned for their immeasurable fighting potential, and are well-acquainted with combat in all forms.
